Brazil brought their first gold medal home yesterday in Rio thanks to the amazing achievements of Rafaela Silva, at 24 years old. Not only was the first medal won by a woman, it was in a martial art discipline — giving Judo a great boost in media attention.

The frustrating thing is that every article written about Silva's accomplishment focuses on her disqualification at the London Olympics. Why taint an amazing moment by bringing up something that happened in her past?

The disqualification was due to an illegal hold, and 2016 has been her chance to redeem herself and leave that step of her career behind. Hopefully the media can get over this and move on to praise her for an amazing achievement.

With the news of Karate becoming an Olympic Sport from 2020, this gives martial arts a huge boost and will hopefully help us see the emergence of some amazing new athletes.
