Meditation Yoga Session

Never underestimate the power of meditation.

Yeah, I used to laugh at the idea too. But as I got more into yoga a few years ago, my teacher made me curious about meditation and what it could do for me. I needed a chance to 'quiet my mind' and take a break from everything that was going on around me — surely it was worth a try right?

My first experience was a class. I wanted to try it while being directed so I knew I was getting it right — my yoga tutor held classes so me and my sister went along to try it. I honestly loved it from the beginning.

After a session I was relaxed and felt refreshed, but there was also something else there — another odd but positive feeling. I'm not going to try to explain that feeling it gives you; there's no way to understand it without actually doing it. I urge you even if it's just out of curiosity to try it and see what I mean.

After I did the classes I downloaded the app Headspace. It seems to be quite popular now which is great news. I chose it because I loved the design and illustration on the app, they just branded it so well which made me think the rest had to have that much effort put into it. After using it for well over a year, I'd recommend it to everybody I know.

Starting off with 10 minute sessions, you're guided through simple steps and before you know it you've meditated. Anyone can find 10 minutes in their day — do it before you jump in the shower, just before you sleep or while your dinner is in the oven. Honestly, it's worth it — it could really change your days.

I'm no hippy (I fight for a hobby), but you honestly can't beat the feeling of starting or ending a day with oils burning, candle light and absolute silence while you sit and focus on nothing but your own body. I also find that doing this before a Kempo session or grading helps me become more focused and aware in that moment, rather than being distracted and feeling drowned by everything going on around me.

Just try it for a week and see how you feel. It's a good short goal to aim for, and if you're enjoying it and feeling the benefits you'll want to carry on.
