Recipe — Green juice.
I know juices can seem pretentious and are on every blog at the moment... And sound disgusting to someone who's never tried them. I've been there. I bought a juicer two years ago after my sister did a juice diet that helped her lose an amazing amount of weight and feel miles healthier. My aim wasn't weight loss, but to detox and get some goodness into my body.
At first, admittedly, it took me a few tries to get the right balances. But now I'll drink any juice with any ingredients and enjoy it. At the moment I'm drinking one a day, my main reason is to get in the veg that I wouldn't be able to eat in a day. My immune system has improved, my metabolism is faster, I generally feel healthier and my body is thanking me for it. Obviously this is alongside a healthy diet and plenty of exercise, but when I don't get my juice I feel different.
So here's my recipe for a sweet tasting green juice that's good for beginners to ease themselves into the juicing world.
2 x Golden Delicious apples
1 large handful of spinach
1 large handful of kale
3cm chunk of cucumber
3cm of a broccoli stem
3cm chunk of lemon
1cm chunk of ginger
Half an avocado
Throw all in a juicer and pour the results into a blender. Pop in your half avocado and blitz till smooth. If you prefer it as a juice rather than a thicker smoothie, leave the avocado out - but it really does taste great. Pour all in a tall glass with ice and enjoy it!
If you're unsure at first, just aim to carry on making the juices until you've used up your ingredients. You've paid for them, so you may as well use them! After a few tries and experimenting with amounts of lemon, ginger etc, you'll feel yourself enjoying it more and more.
The little bottles in the picture are my ginger shots — I take one of these before breakfast and one before lunch every day. It helps to kick start your digestive system and metabolism, and tastes awesome.
Just juice one apple with a big chunk of ginger (the braver you are, the bigger the chunk) and this should make two shots.
